Premiership Rugby 2023: Rule changes

The 2023–24 season is the final year under the current Premiership competition structure before a planned ‘relaunch’ ahead of the 2024–25 season. As a result, the relegation freeze in the RFU Championship will cease and be replaced by a play-off between the last-placed team in the Premiership and the first-placed team in the Championship. Therefore, promotion from the Championship will also be reinstated, subject to the winning club meeting the RFU minimum criteria.

  • This season is also the last year of the league’s temporary salary cap reduction, which was implemented to keep participating clubs financially viable following the COVID-19 pandemic, with further regulatory changes for the 2024–25 season.

Premiership Rugby 2023: Teams

Premiership Rugby 2023: Teams

The competition will feature 10 of the 13 teams that started the 2022-23 season. Two of the other three – Wasps and Worcester Warriors – were previously confirmed to be out of the competition for the 2023-24 season after both clubs were kicked out of the league after entering administration in 2022. The final team – London Irish – was primarily due to competition. Nevertheless, the club was relegated in the summer of 2023, before the start of the season, due to insufficient funds to continue operating. As a result, the 2023–24 season is the first time English rugby’s top flight has seen just ten teams since the 1995–96 season.

  • For the second consecutive year, the Championship’s top team was ineligible for promotion to the Premiership after 2022-23 Championship winners Jersey Reds failed to meet the minimum criteria to join the competition.
