USFL – Birmingham Stallions vs Pittsburgh Maulers Preview and Overview
Birmingham Stallions (2-1 · 2ND IN SOUTH)
Head Coach Skip Holtz and the Stallions are prepared to get back to their winning ways. And are looking to face the Maulers in the 2nd game at Tom Benson Memorial Stadium.
The defending USFL champions were defeated by the New Orleans Breakers in their first game of the season. They gave up 45 points in the loss last week. The Stallions are trying to improve their defense, as a spark was found in the Pittsburgh offense last week. The new head coach Ray Horton earned this first victory by 21 – 13 over the Philadelphia Stars.
Last week, Stallions lost by 45 – 31 to the Breakers. Where they allowed nine plays of 20 yards or more. So limiting big plays will thus be a defensive focus for the Stallions when they meet Pittsburgh on the road.
Through Three games, Birmingham had a league-high 153 rushing yards allowed per game.
“I thought they played more physically than we did” Holtz stated of his teams’s loss against the New Orleans. He warned his team not to take the glory for granted. Also stated that believing in the crown of glory can get them to lose.
Holtz is hoping to get a couple of players back on the defense. Including line breaker Scooby Wright to tighten up the defense. The Stallions will take against a Pittsburgh offense that rushed for 137 yards against the Stars last week. Quarterback Troy Willaims rushed for 65 yards on seven carries in that match.
Pittsburgh Maulers (1-2 · 3RD IN NORTH)
An unusual thing happened after the joining of Blewitt in the team. He showed a spark as a kicker by making a 62-yard kick. He was just warming up after joining the team. No one could really expect this spark from him. The coach brought the whole team to put a little pressure on him. And thus, he showed his worth!
The maulers are really happy about it. Cause little things really matter a lot. And Chris means a lot to them.
Last week, Blewitt went 5-for-5 on field goals. Including a 50-yarder. However, he missed his extra-point attempt.
Horton said He hopes that the guys now believe and trust in the process of what they are doing. Surely they’ll be facing Birmingham this week and this brings another opportunity to try something new. And be ready for whatever the stallions bring to the table. Obviously, confidence and success are inextricably linked. Trust and belief are important to them.
The Maulers have also benefited from great special teams returns. Isaiah Hennie lead the league with 161 punt return yards. Hennie has already made 82- and 53-yard punt returns this season. While Josh Simmons made a 56-yard kick-off return last week.
Last week, The Maulers’ offense found it easier to get into a scoring position thanks to the big returns. Horton also changed the quarterbacks in week 3 from James Morgan to Willams. The Maulers’ offense got more juice with the help of the Utah product’s added dimension as a runner.
“You feel the rhythm, whether it’s music or dance,” said Horton about his offense’s improved performance last week. “And it just looked different to me throughout the week.” The players accepted ownership and responsibility for what the case more than anything else.”
