NFL Christmas Games: History

The NFL avoided Christmas for decades. In fact, the season ended well before December 25 in the early years of the league.

From 1943-70, the championship game was played two Sundays after the end of the regular season, but if that Sunday fell on Christmas Day, the league would do what it could to move the game. For example, the 1955 and 1960 championship games were rescheduled to Monday, December 26, due to the holiday.

The NFL played a Christmas Day game for the first time during the 1971 playoffs after the AFL-NFL merger. The Cowboys played the Vikings while the Dolphins played the Chiefs – and that game became the longest in NFL history at 82 minutes, 40 seconds.

There have been 27 Christmas specials in all. Starting in 2020, the league made games on holidays more mainstream.

Here is the leaderboard for Christmas Day attendance for the 2022 season. The list of teams that have never appeared is long: Jaguars, Patriots, Seahawks, Bills, Panthers, Broncos, Commanders and Falcons. The Giants will play their first Christmas game this year.
